Our Communities

Central west Ontario is a magnificent mosaic of urban, rural and suburban communities, featuring cities, towns and villages cascading across a varied landscape that stretches from the northern tip of Dufferin County to the northern section of Peel Region. It includes densely populated areas like Rexdale (Toronto), Malton (Mississauga), Brampton, Orangeville and Woodbridge. Less populated areas include Dufferin Country and Caledon. Some of Ontario’s most picturesque countryside can be found in this region, which is home to over 800,144 people, representing 6.25% of Ontario’s population.

The people who live in our region are relatively young with a median age of 35 years. While the proportion of the population over the age of 65 is smaller than the Ontario average, the population of seniors in the region is expected to grow by 68.1% (or over 49,857 people) from 2007 to 2019, eventually making it the highest amongst the 14 LHINs.

Enriched by its cultural diversity, the Central West LHIN is home to the highest proportion of visible minorities in Ontario who represent about 50% of its population.

Based on 2007 population estimates 56.1% of the Central West LHIN resides in Brampton, 17.4% in Rexdale, 9.2% in Caledon, 7% in Dufferin County, 5.9% in Malton and 4.3% in Woodbridge, and these communities are continuing to grow. This is especially true in the communities of Caledon (29.48% growth rate), Malton (23.61%) and Woodbridge (17.25%). Overall the Central West LHIN has grown by 8.24% during that time.
