Service Description: Patients that require emergency or urgent care related to a serious injury, illness or condition should visit the emergency department * especially important if the patient is experiencing symptoms and have an existing chronic condition, including heart disease, kidney disease, or diabetes

Patients who need care for the following symptoms should visit the emergency department immediately:

  • chest and abdominal pain
  • seizures
  • stroke symptoms such as: loss of movement of half your body, loss of speech, severe dizziness
  • shortness of breath, dizziness/fainting
  • numbness or weakness in arms or hands
  • fever in infants under three years old
  • pregnancy-related emergencies
  • overdose/poisoning
  • mental health issues
  • sprains, strains or broken bone
  • serious allergic reactions and skin rashes
  • asthma attacks
  • burns
  • cuts that may need stitches
  • earaches
  • conditions related to your eyes
  • infections

Medical Assessment Units (MAU) -Both Brampton Civic Hospital and Etobicoke General Hospital have opened MAUs for emergency patients who are expected to be treated and discharged with 48 hours

Application: No referral required * patients need their Ontario health card and a second piece of photo ID * children need their birth certificate and their Ontario health card
Eligibility / Target Population: People who need medical care for serious illnesses and injuries, emotional distress, or sexual assault * older adults may be eligible for follow-up support
